Mt. Defiance, circa l770, is a classic example of the era’s fieldstone architecture. Originally constructed by members of the Chinn family almost two and a half centuries ago, it was known as Post House #5 on the Alexandria turnpike on the outskirts of Chinn’s Crossing which today is known as Middleburg. Local lore has it that its name was derived from a squabble between early settlers, the Powells and the Chinns. The Powells named their property Mt. Resolute and the Chinns named theirs Mt. Defiance. During the Civil War, Mt. Defiance was also in the midst of the battle of Middleburg on July 19, 1863, when Union General David Gregg battled General J. E. B. Stuart on this property and other lands to the west of Middleburg. The improvements include a three bedroom residence, a two bedroom guest cottage, (which had originally been slave quarters), a stable and a garage which was the original Blacksmith’s shop, complete with a corner fireplace and open hearth. The house has lovely old pine and stone floors, six fireplaces, and the original Post House Tavern Room on the lowest level with an oversized fireplace and beamed ceiling.
